Happy Easter and Happy Birthday!

To celebrate the beginning of the Easter holidays and Chloe and Dervla's birthdays, we were treated to a chocolate fountain and a cake today in class. Thanks Chloe and Dervla and oh, HAPPY BIRTHDAY you two!!

Speech and Drama medal-winners

Congratulations to Connor and Brianna, who both received medals in their Speech and Drama exams in March. Connor performed "Willy Wonka" and Brianna performed "Under the Hawthorn Tree".

Spring Clean

We had fun in the sun this week, picking up the litter around the school. Despite the fact that the area was fairly clean to start off with, we still managed to pick up 12kg of rubbish!

Congratulations on your Confirmation

Sixth class made their Confirmation on Saturday 21st March. Everybody had a great day and here are some photos from the next day at school.

Solar Eclipse

Friday March 20th was a very exciting day. From 8.30am onwards, we were watching for signs of the partial solar eclipse which was due to happen over Northern Europe. Darren, Brianna and Mrs White made pinhole cameras, through which we were able to observe the beginning of the eclipse. Unfortunately, it became cloudy thereafter, but we did observe how dark and cold it became for 10 minutes or so and we observed the birds going to roost in the trees, because they thought it was evening-time!

PALS

We have been following the PALS reading system in our class. (Peer Assisted Learning Strategies). We work in pairs to read a book. First we have "Partner Reading", where we listen to our partner reading and help to correct any mistakes they make. Then we have "Retell", where the reader tells the coach what the reading was about. Then we have "Paragraph Shrinking", where the reader shrinks the main idea of the paragraph into a statement of ten words or less. Finally, we have "Prediction Relay", where the coach asks the reader to make a reasonable prediction about what will happen in the next half page and then see if they were right. We are hoping that these strategies will improve our fluency and comprehension.

Learning about area

The best way to learn is to take action, so we made square metres out of newspaper and laid them out in the yard to show the size of an are (10m x 10m). We had to lie down on them to stop them from blowing away!

Trip to Killygarry Old School

We've been looking at the history of our school. As part of this we took a trip to the old Killygarry school, which was in use between 1894 and 1998. Former teacher Mrs Marie Daly showed us around. She talked about what life was like in the old school, back when she had no teaching aids other than a blackboard on an easel and some chalk.

There were some strange-looking characters hanging around Killygarry for World Book Day 2015
