Fifth class school tour

On the 19th June, we headed off to Omagh to visit the Ulster-American Folk Park. It got its name because it shows what life was like for those people who emigrated from Ireland to America in the 19th Century. On the Irish side we got to see the single-room (famine) cottage, the houses of wealthier farmers, the blacksmith's forge, the school house, the mass house (which also served as a school) and the shops in the little town. Then we "sailed" on the cargo ship with a very cranky captain and we landed in America. The conditions on the ship were truly awful, with the passengers confined to a dark, smelly hold under the deck, with little food, no toilet and sleeping four to a bunk! And we thought the camping was bad.

The Anglo-Celt Cup

Andy from our local GAA club brought the Anglo-Celt Cup into school for us to have a look at. It's the cup which is awarded to the winning Ulster champion team. Hopefully it'll be coming home to Cavan this year!

Paired reading with First class

We're joining with first class for the last couple of weeks of term to do paired reading with them. We're discovering that they are excellent readers and it's also fun to get to know them a little better.

Roald Dahl plays

We were treated to a free performance from a group of Scottish drama students who were on a college trip to Ireland. The two plays were a condensed and hilarious version of Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We'd like to thank Kevin O'Connor and the Cavan Institute for selecting our school to be the recipient of the free performance.

Visit to ATA group

Fifth and sixth class were invited to visit the ATA Group premises on the 31st May. ATA is a manufacturing plant located in the IDA industrial estate behind the Hotel Kilmore. It's a worldwide manufacturer and distributer of carbide spurs, pneumatic air tools and speciality abrasives, employing 200 people in the Cavan area alone. The Director of the Group, Mr Peter Cosgrove was the main sponsor of the Cavan Junior Entrepreneur Programme. On a visit to the school in January, he invited us to come and visit the plant before the school year was out. Thanks to Joanne Gannon, that trip was arranged and we were intrigued to discover what goes on in the factory. The specialised machines were very interesting to see and the sound-proof room was fascinating! Maybe some of the students will find jobs there in the years ahead.

Spelling Specialist

Well done Joanne for representing our class and our school in the County Cavan Spelling Bee in Farnham School. She had some tough competition, but she did us proud.
